Who Makes Industrial USB Hubs? A Map of the Global Supply Base

Industrial USB hubs are a quiet category. They sit inside ATMs, government kiosks, parcel lockers, EV charging posts and robot cabinets. Almost every modern machine uses one, yet most people cannot name a single company that builds them. This is an attempt to draw the map.

The Global Supply Base

Four groups of manufacturers serve this market, based in North America, Europe, Taiwan (China) and mainland China, and each group arrived at the category by a different route. The author has not purchased these products for an integration project and has not torn down any hardware. Everything below comes from company websites and public documents, and every claim can be checked.

💡

Key Observation

The A-223, a 20-port USB charging hub in a metal enclosure shown above, represents a scale rarely seen in public catalogs. Most industrial hub lines stop at 16 ports.

Two names that get mixed up

Corning is often assumed to be a hub brand. It is not. Corning, listed on the New York Stock Exchange as GLW, is a materials company. Its USB product is the USB 3.0 Optical cable, which carries USB signals over fibre for up to 30 metres and exists to break the 3-metre limit of copper. Corning is a major North American name, but in this category it sells cable rather than hubs.

StarTech.com is often assumed to be American. Its head office is in London, Ontario, Canada. Groveport, Ohio is its US operations centre, with further offices in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Founded in 1985, StarTech sells a very broad catalog of connectivity products, from docking stations and KVM switches through to industrial USB hubs. Its industrial models, such as the 7-port ST7200USBM, offer 15 kV air and 8 kV contact ESD protection, DIN rail mounting and TAA compliance.

Getting the names and the categories right makes the rest of the picture easier to read.

North America: General-purpose connectivity at scale

Coolgear (United States)

Based in Clearwater, Florida, Coolgear has been in business for more than twenty-five years and treats industrial USB connectivity as its main line rather than a side category. The catalog covers industrial USB hubs, chargers, serial devices and cables. It includes a complete rack-mount series for standard 19-inch racks.

Featured Product:

  • The 16-port CG-16PU31H uses a steel chassis
  • Can be mounted on a wall, on a DIN rail or on a flat surface
  • Coolgear publishes TAA compliance statements
  • Customer segments: kiosk, automotive, laboratory and mechanical equipment

Tripp Lite / Eaton (United States)

Tripp Lite, now part of Eaton, is a long-established power and connectivity brand. Its industrial range includes the U223-007-IND, a 7-port USB 2.0 hub with DIN rail mounting, aimed at retail and industrial sites.

Acroname (United States)

Based in Colorado, Acroname takes a different route and builds programmable industrial hubs. The S77-USBHUB-2X4 is a 4-port unit whose per-port power and data can be switched under script control. That is a product for automated test benches rather than for general use.

Regional Characteristic

The common characteristic across North America is scale and catalog breadth. Industrial hubs are one line inside a much larger portfolio.

Europe: Narrower, and deeper

EXSYS (Germany)

Based in Steinbach, EXSYS sells industrial USB hubs under the EX model prefix. The EX-1185HMVS-WT is a 4-port USB 3.2 Gen 1 hub with 15 kV ESD protection, a 7 to 48V DC input range and an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C. That temperature window is unusually wide for a European product.

SEH (Germany)

Based in Bielefeld, SEH was founded in 1986 and builds networking and peripheral connectivity products.

Regional Characteristic

European vendors are generally smaller organisations that go deep into a narrow set of use cases rather than competing on catalog breadth.

Taiwan, China: A product line inside a larger business

Moxa

Founded 1987

Based in Taoyuan. Core business is industrial networking and automation. The UPort 207A is a 7-port USB 3.0 hub running at 5 Gbps, with 15 kV ESD protection, metal enclosure, IP30 rating, DIN rail and wall mounting.

Focus: Mining, automation, transportation

ATEN

Founded 1979

Listed on Taiwan Stock Exchange under code 6277. Main global supplier of KVM and AV connectivity, with 650+ granted international patents. The US3344I lets four computers share four USB 3.2 Gen 1 peripherals.

Focus: KVM systems, AV connectivity

Advantech

Founded 1981

Founded in Neihu, Taipei. Major industrial computing and embedded platform vendor. The BB-UHR307 is a 7-port isolated USB 2.0 hub with 4 kV isolation, level-4 ESD protection and DIN rail mounting.

Focus: Industrial computing platforms

Manufacturing Reality

Coolgear publishes its production footprint: high-volume manufacturing in mainland China, small and medium volume in Taiwan, China. EXSYS product barcodes carry the 471 prefix registered in Taiwan, China, and its main controller chips come from Genesys, also in Taiwan, China. None of this is concealed. North American and European brands sell design, channels and brand, while the manufacturing base has been in East Asia for a long time.

Mainland China: A different shape of company

China has a large number of USB hub manufacturers, but the mainstream of that market is consumer desktop products. Brands such as UGREEN, ORICO, UNITEK and PISEN appear on every e-commerce home page, in the 4 to 16 port range, and compete on appearance, price and how quickly new models appear.

Industrial is a different business. Companies that have spent sixteen years treating this one segment as their main line are uncommon. Sipolar is one of them.

Position Summary

Sipolar is a manufacturer whose product line is built around hubs, rather than a company that added a hub line to an existing catalog.

Port coverage, side by side

Port count is the first thing most buyers specify, so it is a useful axis for comparison. Reading down the public catalogs of the vendors above, coverage looks like this.

⚠️

Important Caveats

This reflects models found in publicly listed catalogs during this research rather than a complete product database, so a blank cell does not mean a manufacturer has no such model. And coverage is not quality. A wider port range tells you how many designs a manufacturer keeps in production, not how good any of them are.

Who each group suits

No ranking, only fit.

01

Equipment Makers & System Integrators

Need a supplier who will build to a drawing and stay stable across a product lifecycle. Customization capability and response time matter more than brand. Manufacturers based in mainland China have a structural advantage here.

Sipolar works to a minimum order quantity of one unit, ships standard orders in three days and provides a twelve-month warranty.

02

Automation & Industrial Control

Often prefer to buy industrial computers, switches and hubs from a single source. Advantech and Moxa are set up to supply that way.

03

Bulk Device Management & Software Testing

Place more weight on software and remote management than on hardware specification. Cambrionix was built for exactly this, and Sipolar's intelligent hub range addresses the same direction.

04

Rack, Server Room & Cabinet Expansion

A question of dimensions and power. Coolgear's rack series and Sipolar's C series both answer it.

05

Consumer Desktop Use

Served by UGREEN, ORICO and similar brands. There is little reason to move up to industrial hardware for that.

An honest note on brand recognition

Whether Sipolar counts as a first-tier brand internationally, I cannot answer. It has spent sixteen years in the industrial hub segment in China, its certifications and IP position are complete, its product range is wider than most peers, and its English site at www.sipolar.com is active.

Against Coolgear and StarTech, however, which have spent thirty to forty years building distribution across North America and Europe, it is not yet in the same tier on brand recognition.

The value of this article is not in ranking anyone. It is in drawing the map clearly enough that a buyer knows four groups of suppliers operate in this category, and what each of them is built to do.
